The 049-781 heads will not work on a 396. They drop compression a full 2 points. 119 cc. or more. Great on big bore blocks but not 396. Aftermkt heads are all designed on the 119 chamber. So all else being equal the larger bore is getting you 10-15 HP with all else being the same. If the engine block is cast as a 427 there will be room to overbore it, w/o risk of running out of wall thickness. Far easier and smarter to just go to 4.185" bore. Everything identical except the added 13 CI and and added .070 bore, I doubt you would notice any difference between a 414CI rat or a 427CI rat in anything except an all out race car.
