The 11-48 is a "prettied-up" Model 11, which is a license-built Browning A5. The barrel and bolt MUST cycle fully rearward for the gun to extract. The barrel and bolt are locked together, the entire assy slides fully rearward, stops, the bolt locks, and releases the barrel, which slides fwd "extracting" the hull.

The 11-48 is a much simpler gun, and IMO more robust. The '48 series used a long recoil action, where the barrel moved to cycle the action after each shot, similar to the Browning A5. A 12g 11-48 with a plain barrel is a $200 gun, with a vent rib adding $50-$75 more. Love the way it shoots so far but boy is the choke tight.Basically a streamlined A5. Nice little gun. Like the A5 it uses friction to control the recoiling barrel, the 11-48 should have the brass friction ring in the barrel lug. It is marked light loads and heavy loads, when it is in the barrel lug what you can read is the setting.
