The Ironman championship is happening October 14. Many of the competitors and their families stay before and afterwards, selling out accommodations and rental cars. Rental rates are greatly increased because of the demand. The Big Island basically has one road that rings the island and it isn’t all that scenic. The roads that criss-cross Oahu are much prettier. Volcanoes National Park on TBI is a must-see and you could enjoy some amazing scenery, but many of the best sights are not immediately accessible by car.
